A marvelous oxymoron “knife of the heart” – Love others with patience

Contrary to the bright tackiness of deep red felt surface, embossed gold lettering and fancy borders, the scroll artwork titled "Patience" (a thoughtful souvenir of Hue Festival summer ’08, from Tuan a closed friend who traveled there from Vancouver to attend it), I look occasionally at this wall hanging on the right side of my bedroom and find it quite soothing to the eyes and comforting to read its elegant words.  It whispers encouragement, "Look  right ... patience" especially during needed quiet times to ponder in the comfortable bedroom, about difficult situations that careful interactions must be considered within my family, at my workplace and in my community, as well as with organizations.  In Chinese languages and traditional Vietnamese script, the word "patience" is consisted of two character strokes “knife” over “heart”.  What a marvelous oxymoron of such meaningful word!  Loving truly in any relationship is “tough” love with the strength of patience.

Patience

“Refrain from anger an instant,

Avoid worry a matter one hundred days.

Want harmony a hierarchy at work,

Practice of patience a priority.

Origin each person comprised hundred behaviours,

Conduct of patience is sublime.

Father and son’s patience for each other,

Perfect principles intact.

Husband and wife’s patience with each other,

The children avoid abandonment.

Siblings’ patience unto one another,

Often makes warm and peaceful household.

Friends’ patience in each other,

Meaningful relationship would not fade.

Practice patience within oneself,

Become endearing and loved by many.

One who yet recognize patience,  

Still not being a well person. 

Ngược lại với sự óng ánh sặc sỡ nền nhung đỏ thẩm, chữ in nổi mạ vàng và hoa vân cầu kỳ, tấm vải nghệ thuật treo tường chữ Nhẫn (món quà lưu niệm ý nghĩa dịp Festival Huế hè 2008 từ anh Tuấn một người bạn thân mến ở Vancouver đã về tham dự), mình thường nhìn thấy nó hoàn toàn thanh lịch hòa hợp dịu mắt trên bức tường phía tay phải giường ngủ.  Nó thì thầm khuyên nhủ, "Nhìn phải ... nhẫn" nhất là những khoảng thời gian yên tỉnh mình cần suy ngẩm trong phòng ngủ dễ chịu êm dịu, về tình huống phức tạp và những cân nhắc ứng xử trong gia đình, nơi trường sở làm việc và ngoài cộng đồng đoàn thể.  Trong Hoa ngữ và chữ Nho cổ truyền Việt hóa, chữ "nhẫn" bao gồm hai nét viết “lưỡi dao” trên “trái tim”.  Một biểu tượng chữ nghĩa mâu thuẫn thật cao siêu!  Yêu thương chính thực trong bất cứ mối liên hệ nào, là yêu thương “cứng rắng” đầy nghị lực nhẫn nhịn.      

Nhẫn

“Nhịn được cái tức một lúc,

Tránh được mối lo trăm ngày.

Muốn hòa thuận trên dưới,

Nhẫn nhịn đứng hàng đầu.

Cái gốc trăm nết,

Nết nhẫn nhịn là cao.

Cha con nhẫn nhịn nhau,

Vẹn tròn đạo lý.

Vợ chồng nhẫn nhịn nhau,

Con cái khỏi bơ vơ.

Anh em nhẫn nhịn nhau,

Trong nhà thường yên ấm.

Bạn bè nhẫn nhịn nhau,

Tình nghĩa chẳng phai mờ.

Tự mình nhẫn nhịn được,

Ai ai cũng mến yêu.

Người mà chưa biết nhẫn,

Chưa phải là người hay.”

Passionately Patience - Love others practically!

“There’re times Patience is to love,

There’re times Patience is to choose resolving way,

There’re times Patience is to be whole,

There’re times Patience is to avoid hurting each other.”

Bamboo wallhanging of "Patience" in Vietnamese calligraphy above my computer desk, a cherished token of affection from the beloved after Tet 2007 time apart, often provides such practical living tips on true interacting lovingly with everyone around me. 

"Có khi Nhẫn để yêu thương,

Có khi Nhẫn để liệu đường lo toan,

Có khi Nhẫn để vẹn toàn,

Có khi Nhẫn để chớ tàn hại nhau.”

Tấm trúc treo tường với thư pháp chữ Nhẫn phía trước bàn ngồi máy vi tính, món quà thương mến lưu giữ mãi từ người yêu quý sau khoảng thời gian về quê hương Tết 2007 cách xa nhau, thường đem đến cho mình sự nhắc nhở thực tế cách sống ứng xử yêu thương chân thành với tất cả mọi người chung quanh.
